Auditions for
THE LAB: Beginning with Gertrude Stein

Director: Mark Lord, mlord@brynmawr.edu

All interested students are invited to Theater Games on Wednesday, Sept. 1, from 5-6:30 p.m. where they can meet director Mark Lord and ask questions about the auditions and the production. Students will also have a chance to hear about and ask questions about other theater program offerings at that time and to meet the rest of the theater program faculty and staff. Theater Games, and all theater program offerings, are open to all students, regardless of their level of experience.

Admission to ARTT B253 001 Theater Ensembles and ARTT B353 001 Advanced Theater Ensembles courses is by audition. Sign-up for auditions at Theater Games or on the day of the audition. The course can be taken for academic credit, PE credit, or just for fun.

Director's Notes

Here鈥檚 the question: What kind of play would happen if Gertrude Stein (noted art collector, avant-garde writer, philosopher, and social phenomenon) hung out with Lewis Carroll鈥檚 Alice after Alice had been reinvented by the Uruguayan author Eduardo Galeano (in his book Upside Down)? The answer is that nobody knows, so we鈥檒l have to make it ourselves. That鈥檚 what we鈥檒l be up to in this ensemble.

Participants will explore rehearsal and performance techniques for creating theatrical events inspired by the environment and ideas of ecology.  Our work will be largely outside and will feature solo work, small-group collaborations, and large-scale ensemble work. We will create and play games, perform research, and make performances. Students can explore acting, creating, dramaturgy, direction, and a bit of design (if they鈥檙e interested).

No experience is necessary. This will be a small ensemble (about 8), not cast to play characters, and totally open to anyone, regardless of gender or gender presentation, ethnicity, appearance, disability, or language of origin.

Participants should expect about 10 hours a week of rehearsal (some of which will be in pairs or as individuals). Our project will culminate in a series of showings.

Questions? Ask Mark Lord. mlord@brynmawr.edu.
